MATH AND SCIENCE DAY COMPETITION RETURNS TO BETHANY COLLEGE

Bethany College is excited for the return of its Math and Science Day competition for local high school students after a two-year hiatus.

he math and science competition started in 2007 as a Math/Computer Science Cub student project. Now, the annual event brings students from area schools in surrounding counties for a day filled with competitive fun, a team power exam, and laboratory activities in biology, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, and physics. This year, Bethany was host to 90 students from six high schools.

“Having that sense of competition and fun with math and science, and that we can have a good experience with it, is worthwhile for our high school students,” says Adam Fletcher, associate professor of mathematics. “To see college students running the show and providing activities is healthy for them. And for our Bethanians, it gives them a sense of leadership.”

The competition, held in Boomers, Ogden Dining Hall, and the Renner Art Gallery, is completely written, designed, and proctored by Bethany students—a feat professors say takes hours of hard work and dedication.

“The math and science day is a tremendous opportunity to showcase our program, our faculty, and our students,” says Vice President for Enrollment Management Dana Bearer. “It gives us an opportunity in admissions to pre-screen students to see if they would be great Bethany students.”

The six schools in attendance include Brooke, Chartiers-Houston, Shadyside, Trinity, Union Local, and Wheeling Park.

Bethany College was also pleased to award four full-tuition scholarships to the winning team from Wheeling Park High School. Those students are listed below.
