Governor Patrick Morrisey and First Lady Denise Morrisey are inviting families from across West Virginia to attend the Capitol Christmas Tree Lighting Celebration at the West Virginia Capitol Complex. The event is scheduled for Thursday, December 4, beginning at 6 p.m. on the Capitol steps facing Kanawha Boulevard.
“As we begin this blessed month celebrating the birth of Christ, we are looking forward to having West Virginians join us in kicking off the Christmas season with the lighting of the Capitol Christmas Tree,” said Governor Patrick Morrisey. “We are asking all those attending who are able to donate a toy or coat and help bring holiday cheer to West Virginia children in foster care.”
This year’s tree is a 25-foot spruce donated by Crickmer Farms on behalf of the West Virginia Christmas Tree Growers Association. The celebration will be hosted by WOWK Anchor Amanda Barren and includes performances by the Capital High School band and choir, River City Youth Ballet, Christmas sing-alongs, and other entertainment. Those unable to attend can watch a live stream provided by West Virginia Public Broadcasting.
After the ceremony, guests can visit the West Virginia Culture Center for cookies, hot chocolate, photos with Santa, Mrs. Claus, and an elf, as well as crafts and other holiday activities.
Attendees are encouraged to bring toys and coats for donation to the Children’s Home Society of West Virginia. The organization focuses on supporting foster children throughout the state and has highlighted a particular need for gifts suitable for older children this year. Donations can be dropped off at either the Culture Center or on the Capitol steps during the event.
