The West Virginia Department of Human Services (DoHS), through its Bureau for Family Assistance (BFA), has issued a reminder to residents regarding the upcoming deadline for the Low-Income Household Water Assistance Program (LIHWAP). The application period is set to close on Thursday, February 29, 2024, at 5:00 pm.
LIHWAP is a federally funded initiative designed to help eligible West Virginians manage their water or wastewater bills. Eligibility criteria include income level, household size, and responsibility for paying water or wastewater expenses. To be considered for assistance, applicants must meet specific program guidelines, including having an annual income at or below 60 percent of the State Median Income.
Outlined in the program details are gross monthly income limits based on household size. For instance, a single-person household has a limit of $2,186 per month, while a four-person household’s limit is $4,205. Additional members increase the threshold by $642 each. Notably, certain types of income may not be counted towards these limits.
Although federal funding was initially available until September 30, 2023, West Virginia secured a no-cost extension for an additional six months. This extension period is nearing its end; thus applications submitted after February 29 will not be accepted.
Residents with questions about LIHWAP are encouraged to reach out to their local DoHS office. Contact information can be found on the department’s website at dhhr.wv.gov/bms/Pages/Field-Offices.aspx.
