U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia has expressed her support following the confirmation of Doug Collins as Secretary of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. The Senate confirmed Collins, a former Congressman from Georgia, with a vote tally of 77 to 23.
Senator Capito highlighted the importance of providing timely medical care for veterans, stating, “Supporting and ensuring timely medical care for our veterans is one of the most important promises our government makes to those who serve.” She praised Collins’ background and experience, noting his qualifications due to his past roles as a military chaplain, congressman, and attorney.
Capito emphasized that Collins’ understanding of veteran issues stems from his own experience as a veteran. She believes these attributes will be crucial in implementing necessary reforms within the department. “His background as a military chaplain, former congressman, and attorney uniquely qualify him to serve in this role and will be critical in delivering results and reforms in the department,” she stated.
The senator also expressed her eagerness to collaborate with Collins and the Trump administration to enhance the VA system. Her goal is to ensure that veterans in West Virginia and nationwide receive adequate care and support.
In December 2024, Senator Capito met with Collins to discuss his nomination and understand his vision for leading the department.
