U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) has announced her appointment as chairman of the Senate Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies Appropriations Subcommittee. This subcommittee is responsible for overseeing funding across various programs within the U.S. Departments of Labor, Education, Health and Human Services (HHS), and other independent agencies. Previously, Senator Capito served as the ranking member of this subcommittee during the 118th Congress.

“I’m honored to continue my efforts—now as chairman—on the Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies Appropriations Subcommittee to represent the needs of West Virginians,” said Chairman Capito. She emphasized her commitment to ensuring efficient use of funds and providing critical oversight.

Senator Capito expressed her intention to work with committee leadership and members to support priorities important to West Virginia. These include Alzheimer’s research, efforts to end childhood cancer, addressing the addiction crisis, ensuring miners’ wellbeing, and supporting educational institutions in their missions. “Regardless of the scope or challenges,” she stated, “I will approach this opportunity with the objective of ensuring the voices and priorities of West Virginia are heard and understood.” She also acknowledged Chairman Collins’s support in this role.

Apart from her new chairmanship role, Senator Capito will continue serving on several other Appropriations Subcommittees: Defense; Homeland Security; Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies; Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies; Transportation; Housing and Urban Development; and Related Agencies.

In addition to her duties on the Appropriations Committee, Senator Capito remains active on other committees including Environment and Public Works as chairman; Commerce, Science, and Transportation; and Rules and Administration.

This marks Senator Capito’s fourth chairmanship within an Appropriations Subcommittee during her tenure in the Senate. Her previous roles included leading Homeland Security; Financial Service and General Government; and Legislative Branch subcommittees.
