U.S. Rep. Alex Mooney (R-W.Va.) has objected to Democrats adopting a resolution via unanimous consent urging Vice President Mike Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment to oust President Donald Trump.

Under House rules, only one lawmaker was needed to block the immediate consideration of the resolution.

Democrats are calling on the vice president and the Cabinet to “declare what is obvious to a horrified Nation: That the President is unable to successfully discharge the duties and powers of his office.” They can bring up on Tuesday the 25th Amendment resolution.

Rep. Mooney was among those who did not vote to certify President-elect Joe Biden.

He stated that Speaker Pelosi “should not attempt to adopt a resolution of this magnitude without any debate on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives.”

“It is wrong to have sent members of Congress home and then try to adopt without any debate a precedent-setting resolution that could imperil our Republic. The U.S. House must never adopt a resolution that demands the removal of a duly elected president, without any hearings, debate, or recorded votes.”

Speaker Pelosi has released her statement following the blocking of the unanimous consent request in which her office wrote: “On Wednesday, the President incited a deadly insurrection against America that targeted the very heart of our Democracy. The President represents an imminent threat to our Constitution, our Country and the American people, and he must be removed from office immediately.”
