As someone who has had many people in her life affected by breast cancer in some way, a WVU School of Nursing student recently led a breast cancer awareness event.
Lauren Harrah, a junior at the Beckley Campus, organized the Oct. 18 event at the Learning Resource Center at WVU Tech to share educational pamphlets about breast cancer, as well as breast cancer giveaways, such as bracelets, pens, stickers and notepads.
She said the goal for the breast cancer project was to spread awareness and explain the importance of self breast exams and how it can make a huge difference in your health.
“Being able to detect abnormalities early can save a life and prevent things from getting progressively worse,” Harrah said.
“As nurses, our job is to advocate for our patients and for the community,” Harrah said. “Patient education is such an important part of our care. Patient education makes all the difference in the world!”
She continued, “If you show your patient that you care enough about their health to educate them, they will be more likely to implement that education into their daily life because they understand the importance of it which will promote optimal care.”
