Tucker Named Student-Athlete of the Week | West Virginia University Athletic Department

After a record-setting performance against No. 11 NC State, senior Mary Tucker of the No. 5-ranked West Virginia University rifle team had been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments.

 
Tucker led the way for the Mountaineers in their 4751-4687 win over the Wolfpack. WVU set the program records for aggregate score (4751) and smallbore score in the match (2365).
 
The Sarasota, Florida, native shot and 1196 overall, just four points shy of a perfect score. Her total also included a 597 in smallbore and a 599 in air rifle.
 
Tucker's 1196 aggregate score was good enough to set the WVU program and NCAA record for combined score. Additionally, her 597 in smallbore also set the program record and tied the national record in the discipline.
 
Tucker's 599 in air rifle tied her season high and was just one point shy of a perfect score.

WVU capped its 2022 campaign with a 4-0 loss to No. 2-seed Penn State in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament on Nov. 18, in University Park, Pennsylvania … despite leading in shots in the first half, the Mountaineers were worn down by the Penn State attack … PSU's early goal 18 seconds into the match set the tone, as the score stood at 1-0 in favor of the Nittany Lions at halftime, before they added three more scores in the 56th, 57th and 69th minutes … in the final box score, Penn State led the way in shots (11-8) and shots on goal (8-3), while the Mountaineers took five corner kicks to the Nittany Lions' four.
 
Notes: West Virginia moved to 24-20-5 in the NCAA Tournament after making its 16th appearance in the second round in program history … WVU has made an appearance in 22 of the last 23 NCAA Tournaments … Friday's contest marked the final collegiate game for fifth-year seniors Jordan Brewster, Maddie Murphy and Lauren Segalla … the Mountaineers completed their 27th season of competition at Penn State on Friday, finishing the campaign with an overall record of 11-5-7, including a 4-1-4 mark in Big 12 Conference play … West Virginia secured its 18th conference title after winning the 2022 Big 12 Tournament, marking its 10th Big 12 title all time … coach Nikki Izzo-Brown led the squad to its 23rd consecutive season with 10 wins or more, as she has never had a losing season as the program's only head coach.

Last Week in Volleyball: WVU (7-21, 0-15 Big 12) continued the 2022 campaign when it faced off against TCU on Wednesday, Nov. 16 at the WVU Coliseum … the Mountaineers took sets two and four but fell in set five 15-13 … fifth-year senior Adrian Ell notched her fourth triple-double of the season, tallying 14 kills, 22 assists and 13 digs … junior libero Skye Stokes led West Virginia with 20 digs, good for her sixth 20-plus digs performance of the season … freshman outside hitter Bailey Miller racked up 13 kills and 10 digs for her eighth double-double in the campaign … WVU then went back out on the road to take on Texas Tech at the United Supermarkets Arena in Lubbock, Texas … West Virginia lost in three sets, tallying 27 kills and 33 digs … Miller led the squad in kills with 10, while senior defensive specialist earned seven digs to pace the Mountaineers.
 
Notes: Miller leads West Virginia with 288 kills, while Ell follows behind her with 282 … Stokes paces WVU with 361 digs on the campaign and sits fifth in the Big 12 Conference with 3.84 digs per set … the Chester, West Virginia, native also is eighth in the conference in service aces per set (0.32) … the Mountaineers rank second in the Big 12 in opponent kills per set (11.55) and opponent assists per set (10.80) … redshirt freshman setter Kamiah Gibson ranks eighth in the Big 12 in assists per set with 6.13.
 
This Week in Swimming & Diving: The Mountaineers are off this week ... WVU returns to action on Nov. 30-Dec. 3 as it sends 15 Mountaineers to the 2022 Toyota U.S. Open in Greensboro, North Carolina.
 
Last Week in Swimming & Diving: West Virginia welcomed eight swimming programs, and seven additional diving programs to Morgantown, from Nov. 17-19, for the third annual WVU Invitational ... the Mountaineers won both men's and women's competitions, the men convincingly won, 2147-1323.5, alongside the women's the 1805-1411.5 victory ... the mid-season invite was highlighted by freshman Mia Cheatwood's record-breaking performance in the 100 breaststroke ... the Bowling Green, Ohio, native bested the previous record of 1:01.13 - set by Morgan Callaway in 2019 - with a time of 1:00.56 ... four Mountaineer women saw victories over the weekend, including Cheatwood (200 breast - 2:12.01), junior Abby Reardon (500 free - 4:49.51), freshman Gabriela Martin (200 free - 1:47.83), senior Jacqueline McCutchan (100 backstroke - 54.10) ... on the men's side, freshman Max Nielsen (500 free - 4:27.99), sophomore Conner McBeth (50 free - 20.06, 100 free - 43.06), juniors Roanoke Shirk (200 free - 1:37.13), Justin Heimes (100 backstroke - 48.14), senior diver Owen Johns (3-meter - 347.10) and freshman diver Patrick Burke (platform - 299.60) recorded first-place finishes ... additionally, all relays secured wins for WVU.
 
Notes: At the WVU Invite the women's squad combined for 25 top-ten perfomances in program history, 37 lifetime best times and 26 unrested best times ... the men combined for eight top-ten perfomances in program history, 32 lifetime best times and 32 unrested best times ... WVU has three divers that have qualified for NCAA Zones, including seniors Owen Johns (1-meter, 3-meter) and Marian Tiemeier (1-meter), and sophomore Glenn Eloriaga (platform) ... Mullen, Cheatwood and sophomore diver Sarah Krusinski all earned Big 12 weekly honors on Wednesday, Oct. 19, following their respective performances at the 2022 West Virginia State Games ... following the U.S. Open, the Mountaineers ring in the new year in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, for the Backyard Brawl on Jan. 14.
 
This Week in Rifle: The Mountaineers have completed competition for the fall semester.
 
Last Week in Rifle: No. 5 WVU (10-1, 5-0 GARC) earned a 4751-4687 win over No. 11 NC State on Nov. 18, at the WVU Rifle Range in Morgantown … WVU shot a 2365 in smallbore, as well as 2386 in air rifle … senior Mary Tucker set the NCAA record for aggregate score (1196) and tied the national record for smallbore score (597) in the match … in all, five Mountaineers claimed the top-five overall spots on the match leaderboard.
 
bWest Virginia's aggregate score of 4751 set a new program record and was one point shy of tying the NCAA record of 4752 … the Mountaineers' previous record of 4742 was shot on Nov. 12, 2017, against Murray State … additionally, the smallbore total topped WVU's previous record of 2364 at Navy on Jan. 22, 2022 … Tucker's record-setting day set Mountaineer bests for aggregate and smallbore score … elsewhere, junior Tal Engler tallied a career-high 591 in smallbore and a 594 in air rifle … junior Matt Sanchez had season bests in smallbore (588) and air rifle (597) … with the win, WVU improved to 23-0 all-time against NC State.
 
bSelect members of the No. 27 West Virginia squad will compete in the Canadian national Championships on Saturday, Nov. 26 … action is set for 12 p.m. ET.
 
Last Week in Cross Country: West Virginia took 27th at the NCAA National Championship in Stillwater, Oklahoma, on Nov. 19… redshirt junior Ceili McCabe earned First team All-American honors for the second consecutive year, becoming the fifth Mountaineer to garner the honor for multiple seasons.
 
Notes: McCabe won four of the five races she competed in this season and had a record setting year … she set a the course record at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park at the Live in Lou Cross Country Classic with a 5k time of 16:23.9 … the Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, native also notched the second best time in Penn State National Open history with a 6k time of 20:00.8 … she is the only Mountaineer to win the Big 12 Individual title, and she has done for two consecutive years … she also is the only WVU runner to win the Individual Regional Title twice.
 
This Week in Women's Basketball:
West Virginia travels to the Cancun Challenge from Nov. 24-25, at the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya in Cancun, Mexico … the Mountaineers take on Central Michigan on Thursday at 6:30 p.m., before battling NC State on Friday at 4 p.m.
 
Last Week in Women's Basketball: The Mountaineers (3-0) earned a pair of wins at home … WVU topped Winthrop, 70-48, on Nov. 17, at the WVU Coliseum, before it recorded a 72-51 win over Appalachian State on Nov. 20 … fifth-year senior guard Madisen Smith led the squad with 15 points against Winthrop, while junior forward Kylee Blacksten paced the Mountaineers with a career-high 18 points and eight rebounds against App. State.
 
Notes: In the Winthrop game, 6,640 fans were in attendance for the 'Education Day' contest, good for the ninth-largest crowd at home in program history … WVU's biggest lead over Winthrop was 25 points, as the squad hit nine 3-pointers … West Virginia also led by as many 23 points and never trailed against App. State … WVU moved to 2-0 all-time against both foes … through three games, Smith leads the team with a 13.0 points-per-game average … sophomore guard JJ Quinerly (10.3) and senior guard Jayla Hemingway (10.0) also are averaging double figures in scoring … the Mountaineers have outscored their opponents 223-130 so far this season and have forced 91 turnovers (30.3 per game) … West Virginia last played in the Cancun Challenge in 2019, when it topped New Mexico (73-60) and fell to Creighton (82-75).

Last Week in Wrestling: The West Virginia University wrestling team completed a sweep of Glenville State, Edinboro, and Big 12 foe Northern Colorado at the Mountaineer Quad inside the WVU Coliseum on Nov. 20 ... No. 7 165-pound junior Peyton Hall captured a 3-0 record on the night, which included two major decisions and one pin in under five minutes … redshirt sophomore Austin Cooley and true freshman Brody Conley each added three wins apiece in their Coliseum debut, as Cooley registered a pair of 11-3 major decisions and a 24-8 tech fall, while Conley recorded a pin in 1:32 and a 10-1 major decision … WVU scored 25 unanswered points against UNCO after falling behind 15-0 through the first three matches of the dual … junior Sam Hillegas, ranked No. 21 in the country at 149 pounds, claimed a 9-0 major decision to get the Mountaineers on the board and redshirt senior Alex Hornfeck followed up by outlasting the Bears' Vinny Zerban in a wild finish at 157 … Hornfeck erased a three-point deficit to even the bout at 6-6 in the third period … Zerban retook the lead with an escape in the final minutes of the match, but Hornfeck forced the redshirt freshman to stall, sending the bout into overtime where Hornfeck scored the takedown to grab the sudden-victory win … the Mountaineers produced back-to-back wins against Glenville State and Edinboro to open the quad meet, where WVU outscored the two by a combined 77-12 margin.
 
Notes:  West Virginia earned eight votes in the most recent NWCA Division I Wrestling Coaches poll … two Mountaineers remain undefeated through the team's first dual action over the weekend … Hall improves to 10-0, while Conley stands at 8-0 to kick off his first season in the Gold and Blue  … WVU had six Mountaineers remain steady in the national rankings, provided by Flowrestling … wrestlers included were No. 7 Killian Cardinale (125), No. 21 Hillegas (149), No. 7 Hall (165), No. 24 Anthony Carman (184), Honorable Mention Cooley (197) and No. 17 Michael Wolfgram (HWT) … this is the first season the program has had six wrestlers ranked nationally at the same time since 2012, when No. 23 Shane Young (125), No. 25 Nathan Pennesi (133), No. 29 Michael Morales (144), No. 21 Lance Bryson (174), No. 16 Matt Ryan (184) and No. 17 Brandon Williamson (HWT) made the list ahead of the postseason (EWL and NCAAs).
