Tariq Woody Captures First Double-Double of Fairmont State Career in Win Over WVWC | Fairmont State University Athletic Department
Tariq Woody posted the first double-double of his Fairmont State career as the No. 14 Fighting Falcons (4-0, 2-0 MEC) defeated the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats (0-5, 0-2 MEC) on Tuesday, Nov. 22 night In Buckhannon.
The senior transfer from Cal State San Bernadino dropped 13 points and secured 10 rebounds in the 20-point Fairmont State victory. Isaiah Sanders produced 23 points and pulled down five boards, while Zyon Dobbs inked 16 points and dished out six assists. George Mangas netted 13 points and added two blocks. Fonz Hale distributed seven assists and finished with 12 points. David Jolinder was the sixth Falcons player to eclipse double-figures with 10 points.
The Falcons found themselves down four points when Woody ignited a 9-0 scoring run with a fastbreak layup. Sanders completed a three-point play at the free-throw line that put Fairmont State in the lead. Jolinder slammed home a dunk and an additional fastbreak layup that forced a Wesleyan timeout.
The Bobcats regained the lead after capitalizing on a 6-0 run. Fairmont State responded with 12 consecutive points that extended the lead to 11 points. Hale pushed the Falcons' lead to 12 points after sinking a triple with just over seven minutes left in the opening half. Wesleyan chipped away at the Fairmont State margin and managed to keep the deficit to eight points at halftime.
The Bobcats continued to build off a strong end to the first half in the opening acts of the second half. WVWC's leading scorer Tyler Slone drained a jump shot that trimmed the Falcons' lead to four points at the 16:21 mark in the second half. Sanders responded with a clutch triple that ended the six-point run for the Bobcats. Sanders delivered again after scoring a fastbreak layup off a Hale stolen pass. Dobbs put Fairmont State back in a double-digit lead to finish a seven-point run.
The Bobcats trimmed Fairmont State's lead back down to single digits following a Darius Green jumper. Sanders quelled the Bobcats' run by sinking his second triple of the second half. Woody powered his way to a three-point play and increased the Fairmont State lead to 15 points with less than 10 minutes remaining. Wesleyan did not trail by less than 11 points in the final 10 minutes. Mangas made a pair of free throws that gave Fairmont State its biggest lead of the game and the Falcons led 87-66. Fairmont State picked up its second road MEC win of the season.
The Falcons will return from Thanksgiving break to Joe Retton Arena when they will welcome Charleston to Fairmont on Nov. 30 at 7:30 p.m.
