West Virginia University Athletic Department: Martin Set to Compete at Spanish Nationals

Freshman Gabriela Martin of the West Virginia University women's swimming and diving team is set to compete at the 2023 Rfen (Real Federación Española de Natación) Championship from March 30 – April 1, in Palma de Mallorca, Spain.
 
Martin will compete in the open division of the 200 free on Thursday and 100 free on Friday, before wrapping up competition in the 50 free on Saturday.

"It's great to see Gabriela competing at Spanish Nationals. She's been training really well the past few weeks and we look forward to seeing her compete," said coach Vic Riggs.
 
Last time out, the Las Gabias, Grenada, Spain, native earned a silver medal at the 2023 Big 12 Championships in Austin, Texas, with the 800 freestyle relay team consisting of Martin, junior Abby Reardon and sophomores Miranda Kirtley and Morgan Burton, finishing with a time of 7:15.56. Additionally, Martin placed sixth in the women's 200 free, touching the pads in 1:49.19.
 
During the 2022-23 season, Martin secured four first-place finishes. The first two came at the West Virginia State Games on Oct. 14 – 15 with the 400 free relay team (3:27.38) and then in the 500 free (5:01.78). At the WVU Invite on Nov. 18, Martin added another in the 200 free (1:47.83), before finishing first with the 400 free relay team (3:26.47) against Iowa State and UNI on Jan. 21.
