Of the 1,801,049 people living in West Virginia in 2021, 50.2% (904,326) were women and 49.8% (896,723) were men, according to U.S. Census Bureau data obtained by Mountain State Times.

Data showed the average age for women in West Virginia in 2021 was 44 years, higher than the national average of 40 for women. Meanwhile, West Virginia's male population stands at an average age of 41 years, placing them higher than the US average of 38.

According to census data, despite women being more prevalent in West Virginia during 2021, men aged 18 and over outnumbered women in the same age group by 10,637, totaling 543,158 individuals. Meanwhile, in the 65 and over group, there were 164,810 men and 194,065 women.
