The West Virginia University baseball team defeated Penn State, 3-1, at Meritus Park in Hagerstown, Md., on April 15. The Mountaineers now hold a record of 25-8, while the Nittany Lions fall to 10-24.

The game drew over 4,000 fans. Senior Paul Schoenfeld contributed two hits, including a home run. Senior Brock Wills also had two hits. Sophomore Gavin Kelly and graduate student Sean Smith each drove in a run for West Virginia.

Sophomore David Hagen started on the mound for the Mountaineers and pitched three innings, allowing one run and striking out one batter. Graduate student Ian Korn followed with three strikeouts in two innings before freshman Weston Smith tossed a scoreless inning. Graduate student Reese Bassinger finished the game with four strikeouts over three shutout innings to earn his second save of the season.

Schoenfeld put West Virginia ahead early with his second home run of the year in the first inning. Penn State tied it up with a solo home run in the second inning. In the third inning, Wills hit a triple and scored on Kelly’s sacrifice fly; after Schoenfeld doubled to put runners on second and third base, Smith hit an infield single to bring another runner home for a final score of 3-1.

Bassinger faced only nine batters across his three innings thanks to double plays turned by West Virginia’s defense in both the eighth and ninth frames.

West Virginia will return home to Kendrick Family Ballpark from April 17 through April 19 for games against Houston.
