The West Virginia University baseball team completed a sweep of No. 7 Kansas on May 10 with a decisive 13-2 win in eight innings at Hoglund Ballpark. The Mountaineers, ranked No. 15, improved their record to 35-12 overall and 19-8 in the Big 12 Conference, while the Jayhawks dropped to 37-15 and 20-7 in league play.

This marks the first time in program history that West Virginia has swept a top-25 team on the road, and only the second time they have swept a ranked opponent overall, following their sweep of No. 17 UCF in 2024.

Graduate student Sean Smith led the Mountaineers offensively by going three-for-five with a home run and four runs batted in, falling just short of hitting for the cycle. Senior Paul Schoenfeld and junior Tyrus Hall each contributed two hits and three RBI, while graduate student Brodie Kresser drove in two runs. Several players scored twice for West Virginia: Schoenfeld, Smith, senior Matthew Graveline, junior Armani Guzman, and sophomore Gavin Kelly.

On the mound, graduate student Reese Bassinger entered during the fourth inning and pitched five scoreless innings with four strikeouts while allowing only two hits.

West Virginia took an early lead on an RBI single from Kresser but briefly trailed after Kansas hit a two-run home run in the second inning. Smith responded with his eighth home run of the season to regain momentum for his team. The Mountaineers then broke open the game during a six-run sixth inning highlighted by key contributions from Hall, Ineich, Kelly (who was intentionally walked), Schoenfeld (with a three-run double), and Smith (RBI single). Additional runs were added late through extra-base hits by Hall and Smith as well as sacrifice flies from Kresser.

Bassinger closed out the game by striking out his final batter to secure both the run-rule victory and series sweep for West Virginia.

The Mountaineers will return home to finish their regular season against TCU from May 14 to May 16.
