The No. 15 West Virginia University baseball team will play Penn State in a neutral site game at Meritus Park in Hagerstown, Maryland, with first pitch scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on April 15.
The matchup gives both teams an opportunity to compete outside their home stadiums. The game will not be streamed, but fans can listen through the Mountaineer Sports Network and follow live statistics at wvusports.com.
West Virginia enters the contest with a record of 24-8 after winning two out of three games against Texas Tech over the weekend. This marked the first time WVU had won a series in Lubbock since joining the Big 12 Conference. All three starting pitchers—Dawson Montesa, Maxx Yehl, and Chansen Cole—each pitched at least seven innings during that series, a feat last accomplished by a Mountaineers weekend rotation in 2019.
Graduate student Sean Smith was named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week after batting .600 with four doubles and six runs batted in across four games, which included a midweek victory over Marshall. Smith and sophomore Gavin Kelly currently lead West Virginia with five home runs each this season; Kelly also holds a team-best .418 batting average.
The probable pitching matchup features right-hander David Hagen (2-0 record, 1.88 earned run average) for West Virginia against right-hander Mason Butash (0-0 record, 5.60 ERA) for Penn State.
Penn State is coached by Mike Gambino in his third year leading the program and has compiled a record of 72-70 during his tenure. The Nittany Lions are currently 10-23 this season following a one-win-two-loss weekend against Ohio State. Arkansas transfer Michael Anderson leads Penn State offensively with a .380 batting average, fifteen home runs, and forty runs batted in; Kyle Emmons has been their top pitcher out of the bullpen with an ERA of 4.74 across thirteen appearances.
