The West Virginia Department of Human Services (DoHS) has confirmed the closure of the West Virginia Children’s Home (WVCH) as of December 31, 2024. This development follows a carefully planned process to relocate children to suitable residential placements and reassign staff to new roles within state agencies.
“This closure represents a new chapter for the Department as we continue to modernize and strengthen our approach to providing care for children across West Virginia,” stated Cynthia Persily, Ph.D., Secretary of the West Virginia Department of Human Services. “We are proud of the work accomplished to ensure the safety and well-being of the children in our care and deeply grateful to the staff who supported this transition with professionalism and dedication.”
Prior to closing, DoHS took measures to secure the site. The property will undergo an appraisal by the West Virginia Department of Administration’s Real Estate Division. Furthermore, historical artifacts from the Children’s Home will be preserved by the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History, which includes artwork and documents that honor its legacy.
The announcement about WVCH’s closure was made in November 2024. All staff members were informed about this decision and given opportunities for reassignment within DoHS, the West Virginia Department of Health Facilities (DHF), or other state agencies. The reassignment process for all staff has been completed.
