The West Virginia University baseball team defeated TCU 2-0 on May 14 in the opening game of their final series of the season at Kendrick Family Ballpark. The Mountaineers, ranked No. 9, improved their record to 36-12 overall and set a program record with a 20-8 mark in Big 12 conference play. TCU dropped to 32-19 and holds a conference record of 16-12.

The victory was marked by strong pitching from graduate student Ian Korn and senior Carson Estridge, who combined for West Virginia’s sixth shutout of the season. Korn pitched six innings, striking out six batters without allowing any walks or hit batters, and improved his personal record to five wins without a loss. Estridge finished the game with three scoreless innings to earn his second save.

All scoring took place in the second inning when Sean Smith and Matthew Graveline hit consecutive doubles. After Armani Guzman advanced Graveline with a sacrifice bunt, Brodie Kresser drove him home with a sacrifice fly.

TCU managed to put two runners on base in both the fifth and sixth innings but could not capitalize as Korn ended each threat, including recording back-to-back strikeouts to close his outing. Estridge allowed one single at the start of the seventh inning before retiring nine straight batters through the end of the game.

The teams are scheduled to meet again on Friday evening for game two of their series.
