The West Virginia Department of Health (DH), Department of Health Facilities (DHF), and Department of Human Services (DoHS) have opened applications for their 2024 Summer Internship Program. The Office of Human Resources Management, part of the Office of Shared Administration, is seeking students interested in gaining work experience in health, human services, or health facilities.

Angie Jacobs-Ferris, Chief Human Resources Officer for the Office of Human Resources Management, emphasized the program’s potential benefits: “This is a great opportunity for any student wishing to explore future careers in the areas of health, human services, or health facilities. These internships could also potentially serve as a gateway to a career in West Virginia government following the completion of their education.”

Nathaniel Godwin, who has participated in the internship program twice, shared his experiences. A journalism major at West Virginia University with a focus on public interest communication, Godwin aims to work full-time within one of these departments after graduation. He stated that being an intern allowed him to gain “first-hand knowledge” and highlighted the supportive environment provided by mentors and supervisors.

Godwin described his time with DoHS’s Bureau for Family Assistance and the Office of Communications as enriching: “Everyone I worked with was warm, patient, and receptive. I worked on tangible projects that made my time very interesting and full of learning.” He praised the program’s balance between work and life while allowing students to grow professionally.

Interns are offered competitive wages and flexible schedules. Those working in Charleston can access free housing. Eligibility requirements include completing 30 college credit hours with a minimum 2.5 GPA and being able to work in the U.S. without sponsorship.
