The West Virginia Department of Human Services (DoHS), Bureau for Family Assistance (BFA) has announced the acceptance of applications for the Low-Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP). The application period begins on Monday, February 26, 2024, and runs through Thursday, March 1, 2024, or until funds are depleted. This federally funded initiative is designed to help eligible residents of West Virginia with their home heating expenses.

Eligibility criteria for LIEAP benefits include income level, household size, and responsibility for paying the heating bill. Applicants must have an income at or below 60 percent of the State Median Income. In cases of a heating emergency, applicants need to consult with a DoHS Worker. All program guidelines must be met to qualify.

The maximum allowable gross income levels for LIEAP Fiscal Year 2023/2024 are specified as follows:

– Household Size: Gross Monthly Income Limit
– 1: $2,186
– 2: $2,859
– 3: $3,532
– 4: $4,205
– 5: $4,877
– 6: $5,550
– 7: $5,678
– 8: $6,320
– 9: $6,963
– 10: $7,605

For each additional person in the household beyond ten members, an additional amount of $642 is added to the gross monthly income limit. Households exceeding these limits are not eligible; however, certain types of income may be excluded from consideration.

Applications can be obtained from local DoHS offices or community action agencies and senior centers managed by any Area Agency on Aging. They are also available online at wvpath.wv.gov.

All applications must be received by DoHS or postmarked no later than March 1, 2024. Completed forms should be sent or delivered to the DoHS office in the applicant’s county of residence. A list of local offices is available at dhhr.wv.gov/bms/Pages/Field-Offices.aspx or by calling 304-356-4619. Sending applications to other offices or utility companies may delay processing.
