West Virginia State University Professor of Genetics and Biotechnology Dr. Umesh K. Reddy has been recognized among the world’s top 5% scientists in the 2025 Global Scientific Index and Scientist Ranking, according to a May 18 announcement from the university.
The recognition highlights Dr. Reddy’s contributions to research in plant genomics, crop improvement, artificial intelligence–assisted breeding, nutraceutical research, and functional genomics using model systems such as Arabidopsis, Drosophila, and C. elegans. The ranking is based on bibliometric analysis of global research contributions.
Dr. Reddy’s work has advanced specialty crop breeding, disease resistance, phytochemical biology, and genomics-driven agriculture while providing training opportunities for undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral researchers.
“This recognition reflects the extraordinary caliber of research and innovation taking place at West Virginia State University,” said WVSU President Ericke S. Cage. “Dr. Reddy’s groundbreaking work in genomics, biotechnology and agricultural science is transforming these important fields while elevating the University’s reputation on a global stage. We are incredibly proud to see his scholarship recognized among the world’s leading scientific contributions.”
SciRank Global compiles its index by analyzing more than eight million active researcher profiles and twenty million scholarly works sourced from OpenAlex. Only those ranked in the top five percent by Normalized Composite Score qualify for certification.
According to West Virginia State University officials, this achievement demonstrates both individual excellence by Dr. Reddy and growing institutional prominence in scientific scholarship.
