Senators Open Conference Play With Home Win

After giving up the first set, D&E put together a string of three-straight sets to put away a Glenville State squad in their conference opener at home.

In the first set, Glenville jumped out to an early 17-12 lead on the Senators and then the Pioneers bounded out to a 23-16 lead. While down 24-17, D&E made a late run with five straight points with Jeanne Hassoun serving, before Glenville ended the run and won the set 25-22.

The Senators quickly turned the match in their favor with runs of 6-0 and 7-0 in Set 2. D&E evened the match at 1-1 with a dominant 25-15 second set.

After again falling behind in Set 3, the Senators came alive. Down 15-11, senior Brilane Manchego came to serve and put the ball in play. Following a pair of Pioneer errors and a pair of Macie Magallon kills, D&E once again drew even. D&E and Glenville went back-and-forth for the remainder of the set before D&E put it away 25-21 to move to 2 sets to 1.

The fourth set saw scoring runs by both teams and a tightly-contested frame. The first run came when D&E scored four-in-a-row to go up 6-2. The Senators put together another 4-0 run to move to 19-13. Late in the set, with D&E leading 23-18, Glenville put together a string of six-straight to jump out to a 24-23 lead. D&E scored the next two points to take the 25-23 advantage. Glenville, in turn, scored the next two to lead 26-25. The Senators put together the final scoring run of the game, rattling off three-in-a-row, to win the set 28-26, the match 3-1, and their MEC season opener.

In the contest, Magallon led all players with 18 kills. Maria Isabel Butruce Candiota added 13 kills and Reanne DeBose had 10. Manchego led all players with 42 assists. Clara Caralt chipped in 14 digs and Manchego and Haylie Marumoto added 12 apiece. Hassoun added 3 service aces in the match.

D&E moves to 8-5 overall and 1-0 in the Mountain East.

The Senators will be on the road Friday for a 7pm Mountain East Conference matchup with the University of Charleston.
