The West Virginia Department of Human Services (DoHS) has announced the closure of the West Virginia Children’s Home (WVCH) in Elkins, effective December 31, 2024. The department has stopped accepting new referrals or placements as it reassesses residential placements for children.

DoHS is focused on finding suitable environments for current residents that meet their individual needs. "Ensuring the well-being and continued support of the children in the State’s care remains the utmost priority," stated a representative from DoHS.

For WVCH employees affected by this decision, DoHS will prioritize opportunities within other programs or roles in both DoHS and the West Virginia Department of Health Facilities (DHF). These employees will be considered for relevant positions throughout the state network.

The facility's annual operating cost is approximately $1.7 million due to its 24/7 operation. It typically houses two to five children, with a capacity for seven male residents. A study by ZMM Architects identified $7.8 million needed for deferred maintenance and safety measures to bring the building up to code.

Originally completed in 1909, with additions in 1916 and 1935, WVCH is a historic building valued for its architecture. Despite being well-maintained, it faces challenges due to age and structural requirements.

The state is considering all potential uses for WVCH to preserve its legacy and ensure it continues contributing positively to Elkins. Plans will be developed with input from the West Virginia Real Estate Division.
