West Virginia Faces Oklahoma State Monday Night in Stillwater

West Virginia remains on the road to face Oklahoma State Monday night at Gallagher-Iba Arena in the Stillwater, Oklahoma.

Both teams are coming off tough losses in their conference openers on Saturday night. West Virginia was unable to hold on to its double-digit first half lead and fell 82-76 at Kansas State, while Oklahoma State blew a 15-point halftime lead in its 69-67 loss at No. 4 Kansas.

The OSU-KU game was decided on K.J. Adams' basket with 5.8 seconds left.

Six-six OSU guard Bryce Thompson made seven 3s and finished with a game-high 23 points, while point guard John-Michael Wright contributed 19 points. Oklahoma State was 13-of-29 from 3-point range against the Jayhawks.

The loss was the fifth this season for Oklahoma State (8-5, 0-1), which won two straight over Wichita State and Texas A&M Corpus Christi after dropping a 70-65 decision to Virginia Tech on Dec. 11. OSU's other losses were to Southern Illinois, UCF and Connecticut.

West Virginia lost in similar fashion at Kansas State after jumping out to an early 14-point lead over the Wildcats.

Two long West Virginia field goal droughts allowed K-State to take the lead in the second half before Kedrian Johnson hit a 3 ahead of the horn to send the game into overtime.

Kansas State outscored West Virginia 16-10 in the extra session to pull out its six-point victory.

The two teams combined for 53 fouls leading to 72 free throws and West Virginia was only able to cash in on 20 of its 38 charity attempts while turning the ball over 20 times. Those two areas canceled out WVU's 50 to 36 advantage on the glass.

Forward Tre Mitchell led West Virginia (10-3, 0-1) with 16 points and 13 rebounds, while Emmitt Matthews Jr. added 12 points and five boards and Mohamed Wague came off the bench to contribute 10 points and 10 rebounds.

WVU, which failed to win a Big 12 road game last year, is hunting for its first conference road triumph since downing TCU 74-66 in Fort Worth, Texas, on Feb. 23, 2021.

The West Virginia-Oklahoma State series is tied 11-11 after the Cowboys downed West Virginia 81-58 the last time these two teams met at Gallagher-Iba last year.

Monday night's game will tip off at 7 p.m. and will be televised nationally on ESPNU (Mark Neely and Chris Spatola).

Mountaineer Sports Network radio coverage with Tony Caridi and studio host David Kahn begins at 6 p.m. on stations throughout West Virginia and online via WVUsports.com and the mobile apps WVU Gameday and The Varsity Network.
