Record Breaking Start for D&E Track & Field Continues at YSU Mid-Major

The Davis & Elkins track team was back in action over the weekend (Jan. 27-28), competing at the Youngstown State University-hosted Mid-Major Invitational with over 2,000 athletes.

Much like the week before, the D&E track squad had a very impressive 2-day meet, setting four more school records, an event overall winner, and nine top-10 finishes.

Freshman Martin Lucas, running in his first meet for D&E, started his career by winning the 1000m event overall while breaking the 1000m record (2:32.27). Lucas came back the next day to also break the 800m record, running 1:53.66 and taking nearly 3-seconds off the old record to finish fourth overall in the event. The time is currently a top-5 time in the entire Atlantic Region.

In what was D&E's deepest event of the meet, the trio of Sophomore Carter McKenna (2nd, 8:27), Freshman Konnor Allison (4th, 8:37), and Sophomore Jackson Gibson (5th, 8:38) all finished in the top-5 of the 3000m race. McKenna's time is a top-5 time in the Atlantic Region.

On the women's side, Senior Anya Miller started off the record breaking meet Friday night when she broke her own school record in the 1000m, running 3:07.07 to finish third overall in the event. Also breaking the old 1000m mark was Freshman Lauren Twyman, who ran 3:10.31 to finish in eighth place overall in the event.

Miller was not done with her record breaking meet, on Saturday she broke her third different school record of the season running 2:23.10 to finish 11th overall in the event. Once again Miller was followed closely by Twyman, who finished in 2:26.60.

Also finishing the meet with top-10 performances was Henry Schmidt in the 5000m (8th, 15:09) and Freshman Cooper Gibson in the 1000m (8th, 2:34).

The Senators are back in action this week heading to another DI-hosted meet, this time in Lexington, VA for the VMI Winter Relays Feb. 3-4.
