WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, announced resources from several federal agencies for projects supporting initiatives across West Virginia. These initiatives include economic development, education, environmental cleanup, and drug interdiction.
Senator Capito detailed grants from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for various health projects in West Virginia:
- $8,036,732 to the AFL-CIO Appalachian Council, Inc. (Charleston)
- $7,799,531 to Northern Panhandle Head Start, Inc. (Wheeling)
- $5,339,590 to the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (WV DHHR) (Charleston) for overdose tracking and prevention
- Additional funding was allocated to other health-related programs across the state.
Funding from the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) includes:
- $16,487,073 to the Washington/Baltimore HIDTA region
- $10,146,950 to the Appalachian HIDTA region
The Department of Education awarded:
- $1,956,655 through its Rural Postsecondary and Economic Development Program to EdVenture Group Inc. (Morgantown)
The U.S. Department of Labor granted:
- $149,757 to Telamon Corp. (Martinsburg) for homeless veterans’ reintegration
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) funding included:
- Various amounts totaling over $9 million for Brownfields Cleanup and Clean School Bus Programs
The Appalachian Regional Commission provided administrative grants totaling over $730 thousand to regional councils.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers received:
- $6 million for Ohio River Locks and Dams repairs
The U.S. Department of Agriculture awarded multiple grants under its Rural Energy for America Program.
Federal Emergency Management Organization granted:
- Over $3.75 million for Buffalo Creek Trail repairs in Clay County
National Science Foundation funded research projects at WVU and Marshall University with awards exceeding $900 thousand.
Department of Interior’s Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement provided:
- Over $28 million for Abandoned Mine Land Economic Revitalization payments
- Over $4 million in Payment in Lieu of Taxes awards
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs awarded:
- Over $223 thousand to the West Virginia Humanities Council for the Veterans Legacy Grants Program
Finally, the National Endowment for the Arts granted funds under its Creative Forces Community Engagement program.
