The West Virginia Department of Health, in collaboration with the West Virginia Department of Education and Aetna Better Health of West Virginia, is urging schools to participate in the first-ever West Virginia Healthy Habits School Contest. The deadline for submissions is set for November 5, 2024.

Cabinet Secretary Sherri Young expressed enthusiasm about the initiative: “This is an exciting opportunity for our elementary schools to shine. I can’t wait to see the imaginative ways our students are promoting health. This contest not only makes wellness fun but also encourages our young people to take charge of their health.”

The contest seeks innovative approaches from schools in promoting health and wellness. By showcasing these strategies, the organizers hope to inspire others and drive positive changes in health outcomes throughout the state.

Prizes will be awarded as follows: $2,500 for first place, $1,000 for second place, and $500 for third place. Award ceremonies are scheduled for December.

To enter, participating schools must submit a two-minute video highlighting their unique health initiatives via an electronic form provided by the West Virginia Department of Education since late August. A brief written summary can accompany this submission. Judging criteria include creativity and commitment to wellness with judges from each organizing entity.

Funds won can be used by winning schools to further enhance their health initiatives.

For more information on entering the contest, visit wvhealthyhabits.wv.gov.
