U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito has announced funding from the U.S. Department of Commerce's National Institute of Standards and Technology for West Virginia University (WVU). The funding, secured through a Congressionally Directed Spending request made by Senator Capito for Fiscal Year 2024, will enhance research capabilities at WVU.

"WVU is known to be a global leader in critical research initiatives," said Senator Capito. She highlighted her collaboration with the university during the appropriations process to identify key areas needing support. "It was clear that strengthening their research capabilities was a priority," she added.

The $1,140,000 award will be used for acquiring new research equipment aimed at developing standards and optimization in advanced energy systems, advanced manufacturing, and fundamental biomedical, neuroscience, and life science studies. This equipment will upgrade the existing Sample Preparation Laboratory within WVU's Electron Microscopy Facility.

Senator Capito emphasized that this award would aid WVU in attracting and retaining high-caliber research faculty and students. "I was proud to help secure this award that will have long-lasting benefits for WVU and our entire state," she stated.

The modern facilities enabled by this funding are expected to support recruitment efforts while benefiting WVU's Shared Research Facility by facilitating more ambitious collaborative studies and promoting industrial engagement.
