The West Virginia Department of Human Services (DoHS), through its Office of Drug Control Policy (ODCP), has reported ongoing progress in reducing overdose deaths across the state. This development highlights the impact of their prevention and treatment initiatives.

"We are seeing real progress in reducing overdose deaths, a direct result of our ongoing, data-driven efforts," stated Dr. Stephen Loyd, Director of the DoHS Office of Drug Control Policy. He emphasized the agency's commitment to continuing these strategies under Governor Morrisey’s leadership.

Recent statistics indicate a 38% decrease in overdose deaths from January to July 2024 compared to the same period in 2023. Even with pending cases, this reduction is not expected to fall below 31%. Over a year ending in August 2024, there was a 27.9% decline in drug overdose deaths in West Virginia, surpassing the national average decrease of 21.7%. This translates into 318 more individuals surviving and being able to reconnect with their families.

"This data is about real people," said Christina Mullins, DoHS Deputy Secretary of Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders. She noted that while even one death by overdose is too many, these saved lives reflect the resilience of those who have overcome challenges with support from family, first responders, treatment providers, and community strength. The reduction underscores collective efforts and dedication to providing hope and healing for those affected by substance use disorder.
