The West Virginia Manufacturers Association (WVMA) has announced the recipients of its 2024 Champion of Industry Awards. The honorees, Senator Glenn Jeffries, Delegate Bob Fehrenbacher, and Legislative Staff Member Robert E. Akers, were recognized at the annual All-State Legislative Dinner held at the Charleston Coliseum & Conference Center.

These awards celebrate their legislative service and contributions to the manufacturing sector in West Virginia. Senator Jeffries represents parts of Kanawha and Putnam Counties and chairs the West Virginia Senate’s Economic Development Committee. He collaborates with various government levels to foster economic growth in the state. "Unlocking West Virginia’s full economic development potential has been a top priority for the Senate," said West Virginia Senate President Craig Blair.

WVMA President Bill Bissett praised Jeffries for his dedication to economic development efforts, noting his role in bringing TIMET to Ravenswood, West Virginia. "Senator Jeffries works tirelessly in many facets of economic development at all levels but tends to avoid the spotlight or seek credit for this important work," Bissett stated.

Delegate Bob Fehrenbacher, representing Wood County's 11th District, brings over four decades of manufacturing experience to his legislative role. His engineering background informs his approach to legislation. "In much the same way, Delegate Bob Fehrenbacher brings an engineer’s careful eye to the legislative process," said West Virginia Speaker of the House Roger Hanshaw.

Bissett also commended Fehrenbacher: "A passionate advocate for economic and workforce development, Delegate Fehrenbacher brings a clear understanding of manufacturing along with considerable work experience to his role."

For the first time, WVMA extended its awards to include a Legislative Staff Member. Robert Akers was selected for his expertise and commitment as Legal Counsel to the West Virginia House’s Committee on Energy and Manufacturing. Speaker Hanshaw remarked on Akers' skills: "This award highlights the expertise and commitment to public service I’m proud to say we have throughout our staff."

Bissett highlighted Akers' dual passion for law and manufacturing: "Robert Akers is not only an accomplished lawyer who has worked in intellectual property but also possesses a strong background in manufacturing."
