The West Virginia Department of Health has announced the release of the 2025 Sport Fish Consumption Advisory. This annual update is developed in collaboration with the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection and the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources. The purpose is to provide guidance for anglers and their families on making informed decisions about consuming fish caught in local waters.

The advisory for 2025 reflects a review of recent fish tissue data alongside historical data analysis. According to the department, "there have been no changes to the current West Virginia sportfish advisory, as the recent data indicates that no changes were needed." Those interested can access the complete advisory online at https://oehs.wvdhhr.org/fish.

The presence of low levels of chemicals such as PCBs, mercury, selenium, and dioxin has been detected in some fish from specific areas. The advisory aims to assist individuals in determining fishing locations, choosing types of fish to consume, limiting consumption frequency and amounts, and preparing fish to minimize contaminants. It is especially important for women of childbearing age, children, and regular consumers of fish to adhere closely to these guidelines due to their increased susceptibility to contaminants over time.

This advisory pertains exclusively to sport fish caught within West Virginia waters. The United States Food and Drug Administration oversees safety regulations and advisories for commercially available fish. More information can be found by contacting the FDA through their website at https://www.epa.gov/fish-tech/epa-fda-advice-about-eating-fish-and-shellfish.
