Charleston, WV – On July 5, U.S. Senator Joe Manchin, member of the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee, announced $504,992 from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for two research projects at West Virginia University (WVU). The funding will support vital research into plasma physics and conservation laws in atmospheric science.
“West Virginia University continues to make our state proud with innovative research projects that create new knowledge in the fields of science, mathematics, technology and so much more,” said Senator Manchin. “I’m pleased the National Science Foundation is supporting our hardworking students, faculty and staff involved with these two collaborative initiatives, which advance our understanding of plasma physics and atmospheric sciences. As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, I will continue advocating for resources to support research projects and our universities across the Mountain State.”
Individual awards listed below:
- $474,996 – West Virginia University: Energy Conversion Beyond the First Law of Thermodynamics in Non-Equilibrium Plasmas
- This project will be a collaborative effort with the University of New Hampshire to study energy conversion in weakly collisional plasmas.
- $29,996 – West Virginia University: Systems of PDEs in Fluid Mechanics and Atmospheric Sciences
- This project will bring together experts, early researchers and students to share and exchange the latest advances in the study of systems of conservation laws and related applications.
