MASON COUNTY, W.Va. – U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito visited Mason County to participate in two significant events. She delivered remarks at the 250th anniversary commemoration of the Battle of Point Pleasant and toured the Nucor Steel construction site.

Senator Capito, a member of the Congressional America 250 Caucus, spoke at a ceremony in Point Pleasant, where she laid a wreath to honor those who died in what is often considered the first battle of the American Revolution. “As we prepare to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the founding of America, it is important that we retrace the roots of the revolution to understand the struggle in the fight for freedom," she said. "It was an honor to speak at the ceremony and remember some of the very first patriots who sacrificed so much for our freedom.”

Following this event, Senator Capito visited Apple Grove to assess progress at Nucor's construction site. The senator has supported Nucor's project, which represents both West Virginia’s largest investment and Nucor’s largest single private investment.

In June 2022, Senator Capito previously toured this facility and advocated for its progress during an EPW Committee hearing in May 2023. She also participated in last year's groundbreaking ceremony.

Reflecting on her involvement with infrastructure legislation and job creation efforts through partnerships like that with Nucor, Senator Capito stated: “Nucor’s investment will make our communities stronger and open doors for so many workers and their families.”

Johnny Jacobs, Vice President and General Manager of Nucor Steel West Virginia, expressed gratitude towards Senator Capito: “From the entire Nucor family, we extend our utmost appreciation to Senator Capito for her unwavering support provided not only to our West Virginia project but to the manufacturing industry as a whole.”

Photos from these events feature U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito attending both ceremonies on October 10, 2024.
